Paralysis of the Muscles of the Hip.—The effect of par-alysis of the muscles about the hip is difficult to describe, as in DISEASES OF THE NEBVOUS SYSTEM. 641 these cases many other muscles are usually involved. If allthe muscles are paralyzed the thigh dangles. This is, however, very unusual, for the tensor vaginse femoris almost alwaysretains its power and it is one of the causes of flexion deformitywhich is so often present in cases of this character. Fig. Brace for complete paralysis of the anterior muscles of the limb ; before and after covering. Paralysis of the iliopsoas muscle makes it impossible for thepatient to flex the thigh directly. If the adductors are par-alyzed he must lift the thigh with the hand when adduction isdesired. Paralysis of the glutei is made evident by the atrophyand by the weakness of the extending power of the limb. The distribution of the paralysis of the muscles of the hipmay be ascertained by placing the patient in the recumbentposture; the leg is then lifted from the table, and by placing thethigh in different positions the ability of the patient to move itmay be tested, in older subjects by voluntary effort, in youngerones by pricking the part slightly with a 642 OETHOPEBIC SUEGERY. Fig. 427. General weakness of the muscles of the hip causes an awk-ward, insecure gait, accompanied usually by outward rotationof the limb, and, as has been stated, there is almost al
