Another poly-chrome jug of the same date shows a lily spray,^ which may also have been ex-cerpted from some, parallel composition on the Palace walls. The monochrome successors of such floral subjects that. now appear make up for the deficiency of colouring by greater picturesqueness of treatment, and in this way present a nearer relation to their proto-types in the greater Art. The fondness of the M. M. Ill vase painters for groups of lilies recalls the beautiful fragment of painted stucco from the South-East House belonging ap-parently to the early part of the present Period.
