The Swedish textile chain H&M has announced the closure of nine stores in Madrid and is going to apply an Employment Regulation File (ERE) throughout Spain that affects 20 percent of the workforce. For this reason, the employees of this company promote work stoppages in defense of their jobs and asking the multinational to review the layoff plans. The demonstrations have started on Madrid's Gran Vía, where workers are holding up "no one is left over" banners. Precisely the store on that main street is one of the nine that are going to close despite the fact that employees affirm that it brings benefits to the company. And it is that 1,100 workers of the Community see their position in danger because they have already announced that they are going to apply an ERE. "H&M plans to close 30 stores and most do not have losses, on the contrary, they have millionaire profits," says one of the protesters. These stoppages in activity have started this Friday from to in front of the Gran Vía store. Some of the affected employees have just come out of an ERTE due to the coronavirus pandemic. "In these ERTEs the company has benefited from millionaire aid, exemptions from social security quotas and now they are proposing an ERE," says one of the employees. For the moment, the multinational continues with the layoffs and, according to some affected parties, the only solution they are given is "relocations within 24 hours."
