OIL WELLS IN THE WOODS CHAPTER I THE HUB OF OILDOM IN one of the most picturesque spots along thedevious path of the Allegheny River, where yearsago the Seneca Indians, with their intuitive lovefor nature, had built their village, stands to-day oneof the most beautiful cities of northwestern Penn-sylvania. The river, winding southward like a gigantic ser-pent, makes a sudden pause above the citys line, asif awed by the beauties of the place; then, turningwestward in its channel, divides the city into a northand south side, before turning its course southwardagain. Why it is that this lovely and historic spot, withall its wild traditions, has escaped the novelist, isdifficult to understand. Some two miles above the city, Cornplanter Run,gushing down the mountain side, empties into Oil [1]
