Tennessean Lamar Alexander makes his first run for governor of Tennessee by crisscrossing the state in his red and black plaid shirt and his down home


Andrew Lamar Alexander Jr. (born July 3, 1940) is an American politician from Tennessee. Alexander is the Senior United States Senator from Tennessee, having served in the United States Senate since 2003. A member of the Republican Party, Alexander served as the Conference Chair of the Republican Party in the US Senate from 2007 to 2012. Born in Maryville, Tennessee, Alexander is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, and New York University School of Law. He served a the 45th Governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987. After a lengthy vacation in Australia with his family that he wrote about in a book entitled, Six Months Off, he served as the President of the University of Tennessee from 1988 to 1991, and as the United States Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993.
