About a week after reaching home, I received the followingcertificate from the owner: Boston, April 23, 1877. This certifies that this portrait of Myles Standish was purchased for such, at Germantown, Philadelphia, shortly before the war of 1812, of a branch of the Chew family, by Roger Gilbert, who was born at Portsmouth, Virginia, and lived in Philadelphia at the time. The portrait Is reproduced In the Memorial Historyof Boston (Boston, 1880), Volume i, page 6^, with thiscomment by Justin WInsor: The canvas stands In need ofcomplete Identification as a likeness . . but until positivelydisproven, It must have a certain Interest.
