Merriam Company, died on February 2nd, aged 81 years. Hewas for many years a popular Public School principal, and w^as at onetime assistant superintendent of schools for Missouri. After leaving theteaching profession the prime interest of his life was the publishing ofWebsters Dictionary. His strong work for the company was in con-nection with the educational ; North Bay High School Mr. P. W. Brown, , Principal of North Bay High School, whensending the accompanying illustration, writes: Secondary educationdid not receive in North Bay the attention it deserves until a year ortwo ago, when the High School Board, seeing the town progressingrapidly in other directions while education was almost at a standstill,decided to build a new High School. As a result we have a school prem-ises valued at over $100,000. It is complete in all its appointments, anda credit to the town. Besides the principal, the staff consists of Mr. F. , , Miss E. M. Code, , Miss M. F. Ryan, , andMr. V. C. Quarry. The attendance has increased considerably, and it isexpected that the school will soon attain the rank of a Collegiate Insti-tute.
