He has been through a long life deeply interested intemperance work, and has been connected for nearly halfa century with the cause in connection with preachingthe gospel. He is a member of the Church Temper-ance Association, whose head-quarters are in New YorkCity. Dr. Clarke received the usual college degrees and , and, later, from a Western university, thedegree of , based upon a written In addition to his clerical and educational labor, he hasalso been engaged in benevolent work of a public char-acter in church and state. He also prepared with great labor, during the years[883-85, the Roll of 1 tonor, written as a memorial ofmore than five hundred graduates who distinguishedthemselves as soldiers in the war of the Rebellion. Thisrecord is found in the library of the college, and hasbeen published in the last triennial. Dr. Clarke has been nearly fifty years in the academic career was a highly distinguished one, andhis clerical life has evinced scholarly culture and literaryability. He devotes himself with large conscientiousnessto the fulfilment of his official duties and for the bestinterests of the prisoners with whom he is daily in con-tact.
