Osman Pasha Ottoman hero of the siege of Plevna 1877
From an original engraving Illustrated London News pub 1877 Wiki: Osman Nuri Pasha 1832 – 5 April 1900), also known as Gazi Osman Pasha, was an Ottoman field marshal and the hero of the Siege of Plevna in 1877. Although unsuccessful in defending the city, he was awarded the title Gazi ("warrior" or "veteran") as a result of that siege. Although the declining Ottoman Empire was by this time often regarded as "the sick man of Europe", the Ottoman Army's five-month-long resistance in the face of overwhelming odds earned a degree of admiration. Most battles confirm the way that things are going already; Plevna is one of the few engagements which changed the course of history. It is difficult to see how the Ottoman Empire could have survived in the Russians had reached Constantinople in July; probably it would have collapsed in Asia as well. the Ottoman Empire another forty years of life.
