They arebounded above by the lateral cartilage of thenose, and the nasal, sphenoid, and ethmoidbones; below by the hard palate. On the outerwall of each fossa are tivfse projecting processes, called spongy bones; the two superior belong to [the ethmoid, and the inferior is a separate bone;they increase the surface upon which the mu-cous membrane is spread out. The spaces bo- nasal the upper and middle, the middle and lower, and lower andfaor of the nostrils, are the superior, middle, an infer m meatuses. 190 ANATOMT. In tlio superior meatus are several openings into the nasal fossa; of thesphenoidal and posterior ethmoidal cells; in the middle the anterimethmoidal cells, the frontal sinuses, and the antrum ?niaxillare: and inthe inferior the termination of the nasal duel. The mucous membrane of the nasal fossa; is called pituitary ofSchneiderian; it is continuous with the lining membrane of the cavities, and extends into the sphenoidal and ethmoidal cells, frontal sinus, and antrum, through the nasal duct to the eye, where itis continuous with the conjunctiva; along the Eustachian tubes into thetympanum and mastoid cells, and through the posterior nerves into thepharynx and mouth, thence through the lungs t. id alimentary canal. ItsBurface is furnished with a delicate columna epithelium, supportinginnumerable vibratile cilia. The arteries of the nasal fossae are the anterior and posterior ethmoi-dal
