A cannon and an anchor off the HMS Siruis at Macquarie place Sydney The Sirius convoyed the first fleet to Sydney leaving the Isle of Wight 13th May 1787 and arriving Botany bay January 20th 1788 Phillip decided after 6 days the Sydney cove would be a more suitable location to establish a colony and so the fleet arrived there on 26th January This date has become Australia day celebrated across the nation annually
