In the majorityof cases vignetted prints will prove themost satisfactory (2.) PHOTOGRAPHING ANIMALS. As in the case of animal photographyvery often rapid movements are to befixed by the camera, a first-class rapidlens of sufficiently long focal length(seven to eight inches at least) shouldbe used. If it is possible to previouslydetermine the place where the exposuresare to be made, it is well to set up a suitablebackground in a proper position, corres-ponding, of course, as regards colour withthe objects to be photographed. Thus, for instance, a white sheet should notbe hung up if a white cat or goat is to betaken, nor a dark-coloured material if. PHOTOGRAPHING ANIMALS. I5 dark-coloured animals are to appearbefore it. This applies also to theground over which the animal , the background should be ofsufficient size to cover the whole plate, and not leave an end or side if the animals are small, thebackground should come down fully tothe ground, otherwise there will alwaysbe an unsightly space just in the rear ofthe lower legs. In order to ensureaccurate focussing, the moving subjectshould arrive at a point which has pre-viously been determined and focussedupon. As full sunlight will have to be usedin order to obtain sufficient rapidity, greatattention must be paid to the shadows, which very often are thrown heavily uponthe background or on the ground, orboth, and are more prominent than else in the picture.
