Large Planisphere, or Mappa Mondo, Large Planisphere, or Mappamondo. This map is a copy of an original that was compiled and drawn in the year 1459 by Fra Mauro, a monk of the Order of Camaldoli. This version is a coloured copy, drawn on vellum, about seven feet square, executed by William Frazer in 1804. The original map is preserved in the monastery of St. Michael di Murano, at Venice. Fra Mauro is thought to have based his map on existing maps and oral accounts by foreigners visiting Venice at the time. South is at the top, north at the bottom.
