Fatty degeneration is common, but calci-fication is only observed in psammoma. The granular detritus in fattydegeneration is either absorbed or, by the addition of serum, remainsas a turbid fluid which occupies spaces surrounded by tumor-tissue,forming cysts without a proper cyst-wall. The imperfect development of the walls of blood-vessels is thecause of frequent hemorrhages into the substance of the tumor, wherethe blood either coagulates, is absorbed, or remains in a fluid state. jmKm ? ,-*;-:,T-^/./- X. The staining of the tissues of the tumor in the vicinity of rupturedcapillaries is one of the characteristic features of most of the sarcoma-tous growths. The liability to hemorrhage is increased by the exten-sion of fatty degeneration to the capillary walls. If the hemorrhage iscopious, the tumor-tissue is compressed by the extravasated blood, and 552 PATHOLOGY AND TREATMENT OF TUMORS. a blood-cyst forms, which frequently adds to the difficulty in sudden increase in the size and tension of the tumor should leadto the suspicion that a free hemorrhage has taken place into the sub-stance of the tumor. In subcutaneous sarcomata this accident is oftenannounced a day or two later by discoloration of the skin. Hyalinedegeneration is not as frequently observed in sarcoma as in deg
