But in saying all thesethings we have to confess that the artists secret stilleludes us. We have still to pluck out the heartof his mystery. For if Mr. James Paterson hasone quality more developed than another it is hispoetic sense. In him it may be truly said mation is master. Thus his feeling is moreaccentuated than in the majority of his contemporaries who have gone to Paris for their technicaltraining. It is this quality, so rarely found in theaudacious canvases which scream from the wallsof the more progressive of our exhibitions, whichmarks out Mr. iatrrsons work
