Mr. Wood used a fluted roller armed with needles, todoff the cotton; and both this contrivance and themetallic comb seem to have had their prototype in the needle-sticks of Lewis Paul; but experience hasdecided in favour of the crank and comb as the bestapparatus. By these several inventions and improvements thecarding engine was perfected. It became a mostimportant, as well as beautiful machine. At one end ofit the cotton-wool was put in, an entangled and knottedmass, the fibres lying in every direction; and at theother end the wool came out an even, delicate film,with the fibres straightened, and that film immediatelycompresse
