On the completionof the road to Jessup, Iowa, in 1858,he was appointed chief engineer; andconstructed the road through to SiouxCity, Iowa, together with the CedarFalls & Minnesota, a branch Unefrom Cedar Falls Junction up the. U-f Capt. James Edward Ainsworth. valley of the Cedar river to Mona at the Minnesota state Une, all nowoperated by the Illinois Central. Dining this time, he made a survcj^ fromSioux City, Iowa, up the valley of the Big Sioux River to Sioux Falls, SouthDakota. He also constructed a portion of the Dubuque & Southwesternin Linn County, Iowa, and that portion of the Chicago, Dubuque & Minnesotaalong the west bank of the Mississippi River from Dubuque to North ]McGre-gor, also the Iowa Eastern (narrow gauge) from Beulah Junction to Elkaderin Clayton County, Iowa, all now operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee &St. Paul.
