However, it may be said that, byusing a connecting device separate from the couplerand flexibly hung below it, automatic coupling ofair hose and control wires may be accomplished,and such devices are to-day in use to some extentwith steam railroad passenger equipments. Two types of tight-locking couplers are especiallyprominent at the present time for electric railwayequipment. Both have the distinguishing featureof the type in general which consists in free radialmovement in a horizontal plane together with pro-vision to permit several inches of relative move-ment vertically between the ends of the two coupled.
