WASHINGTON DC, United States — Interactive fountains and water features animate the plaza spaces at The Wharf, a redeveloped waterfront district in Southwest DC, as dusk settles over the mixed-use development. Modern buildings frame the water displays, which provide both aesthetic appeal and public gathering spaces.
Photograph by David Coleman. The Wharf in Washington DC showcases contemporary urban design through its integration of public fountains and water features. This mixed-use development, which opened its first phase in 2017, transformed the Southwest Waterfront into a vibrant commercial and residential district. The fountains serve as central gathering points within the development's public spaces, complementing the modern architecture of surrounding buildings. Located along the Washington Channel, The Wharf spans 24 acres of waterfront property and represents one of DC's largest recent urban renewal projects. The development features more than $ billion in new construction, including retail, residential, office, and hotel spaces. These water features form part of the project's extensive public amenities, which include promenades, piers, and parks designed to reconnect the city with its waterfront heritage.
