Homo erectus skull fragment. Artwork of a cranium from the skull of the Homo erectus species of early humans. This illustration is based on fossil remains discovered at Ngandong on the banks of the river Solo, Java, Indonesia, dating back around 800,000 years ago. The Homo erectus fossils found on Java and in the surrounding area are referred to as Java Man. Artwork by the British illustrator John Sibbick.
