Thlinget Totems, Alaska.; Scope and content: Text on card: The top figure represents the crest of the owner of the house, the next one below his wife's crest; one next in order the crest of the mother of the owner of the house; then the fourth in order is his wife's mother's crest; after these the next one is the owner's uncle's crest, and the last one the crest of the owner's wife's uncle. As a rule, there are only four figures carved on the totems; only the greatest chiefs have six figures carved.
