Hendricks for Governor,and denounced in their platform the reconstruction policy of theRepublicans; recommended that United States treasury notes besubstituted for national bank currency; denied that the GeneralGovernment had a right to interfere with the question of sufiragein any of the States, and opposed negro suffrage, etc.; while theRepublicans nominated Conrad Baker for Governor, defended itsreconstruction policy, opposed a further contraction of the currency,etc. The campaign was an exciting one, and Mr. Baker waselected Governor by a majority of only 961. In the Presidentialelection that soon followed the State gave Grant 9,572 more thanSeymour. During 1868 Indiana presented claims to the Government forabout three and a half millions dollars for expenses incurred in thewar, and $1,958, was allowed. Also, this year, a legislative. HISTORY OF INDIANA. 193 commission reported that $413, were allowed to parties suf-fering loss by the Morgan raid. This year Governor Baker obtained a site for the House ofKefuge. (See a subsequent page.) The Soldiers and SeamensHome, near Knightstown, originally established by private enter-prise and benevolence, and adopted by the Legislature of theprevious year, was in a good condition. Up to that date the insti-tution had afforded relief and temporary subsistence to 400 menwho had been disabled in the war. A substantial brick buildinghad been built for the home, while the old buildings were used foran orphans department, in which were gathered 86 children ofdeceased soldiers. DIYORCE LAWS. By some mistake or liberal design, the early statute laws ofIndiana on the subject of divorce were rather more loose than thoseof most other States in this Union; and this subject had been amatter of so much jest among the public, that in 187
