This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Martian craters. Mars Express image of craters in the Hellas Planitia (Hellas Basin) region of Mars. This area is many kilometres wide. North is to the right. The craters (3 overlapping at lower right) were formed by ancient asteroid impacts. Mars is a cold desert world. There is very little geological activity at the moment, though past activity is thought to have formed features like the ridges and possible erosion features at centre. Data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003.
