Arbeit macht frei sign (in German Work sets you free) on the Main gate or Guard Tower A and Appellplatz (roll call area) of Nazi German Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen (Sachsenhausen concentration camp) in Oranienburg, Brandenburg, Germany. Established in July 1936, the camp was considered by SS as a model camp. By April 1945, when the camp was liberated by the 2nd Infantry Division of the Polish Army, the Germans had murdered about 50,000 of the more than 200,000 prisoners. From August 1945 till the spring of 1950 Soviet occupying forces used the place as a NKVD special camp Nr. 7, later Soviet Special Camp Nr. 1 internment camp. From 60,000 people, some 12,000 died. Today, the site is open to public as a memorial © Wojciech Strozyk / Alamy Stock Photo
