Hans Bohrdt (1857 - 1945)., "Heimkehr" (Return Home) of the Brandenburg 1901. Gouache on paper mounted on pasteboard. Signed "Hans Bohrdt" at the lower right, and entitled "Heimkehr" on the lower edge. The SMS Brandenburg, bedecked with festive flags, is anchored at Wilhelmshaven, surrounded by numerous small boats with celebrating civilians. Matted, under glass, and newly framed. 63 x 44 cm. The ship of the line "Brandenburg", which came off the ways in 1891, was ordered on a voyage to East Asia on 4 July 1900. After participation in the siege of the Shanhaiguan and Qinhuangdao Fortresses during the Boxer Rebellion, she returned to Wilhelmshaven on 11 August 1901. A self-taught maritime painter, Hans Bohrdt s fresh and lively style enchanted Emperor Wilhelm II, and Bohrdt accompanied the Emperor as his artistic traveling companion on his voyages to Italy in 1896 and
