The red grumoussubstance, so abundantly diffused through its interior, has been shown by Dalrymple to consist of granularmatter, nucleated cells, and caudate corpuscles, similarto those of cancer. The softening generally involves the whole thicknessof the bone ; but cases occur in which the outer tableremains unchanged, consisting of a thin, brittle disorder obviously consists either in an inordinateabsorption of the phosphate of lime, upon which thesolidity of the osseous structure naturally depends, orin a deficient deposition of this matter into its Gr. 0. Rees, from a careful analysis of three diseased specimens, taken from the same adult subject, obtained the following results, which he has compared withthose furnished by healthy bone:—. Section of a softened femur;the medullary and cancellousstructures are occupied by atransparent jelly-like fat, ofvarious colors. • Di •<eased. Heallhy. FibulaRib .Vertebra . Earths. Animal Earths. Animal On examining this table, it will be observed that, in the diseased as well as inthe sound state, th6 fibula contains more earthy matter than the rib, and the ribmore than the vertebra. In health, the vertebra and rib approach very ilearly intheir proportions of animal and saline ingredients, whereas, in softening, a con-siderable difference obtains. Dr. Leeson, who has very recently investigated this subject, has found a speci-men of softened bone to be composed of of animal matter, of phos-phate and carbonate of lime, and of water. Causes.—What are the causes of this remarkable disease, or the circu
