Larynx cartilage. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a piece of cartilage from the larynx (voicebox). This is part of the larynx called the arytenoid. There are two arytenoids, attached to the vocal folds and the pharyngeal muscles. When the muscles contract they pull their ligaments tight and stretch the vocal folds out into the air passageways. If air is directed against the vocal folds, they vibrate to produce sound. This is from a sheep's larynx. Magnification: x2 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
