Electric railway journal . slature Will Lend States Credit THE trustees of the Boston Elevated Railway havejust made public plans for the construction of a newconsolidated set of shops at Everett, at a cost ofnearly $5,000,000, and the entire abandonment of theseveral antiquated and scattered shops which have beenin service for the last thirty or more years. Thisannouncement was made by Edward Dana, general man-ager for the trustees, at a hearing before the committeeon street railways of the Massachusetts Legislature, which has under consideration a bill lending the Statescredit to the company. The general layout and type of construction proposedfor the new Everett shops is best illustrated by theaccompanying photographs of the plans which theofficials of the Boston Elevated Railway submitted to theLegislature. It is proposed to handle all repairs, exceptsuch minor ones as are always done at carhouses, in thenew shops, including rapid transit as well as surfacecars. The location chosen is at the Everett terminal. efficient automatic coupler, which isclaimed to have been brought outand perfected by a Swiss firm andwhich has proved its value on sev-eral continental railway coupler is very simple to use,and the coupling is accomplishedentirely automatically. To separatethe cars it is only necessary to lift ahandle on the side of the couplinghead. The two coupling halves areabsolutely identical, and each con-sists principally of a funnel-shapedcoupling head from which a horizon-tal arm projects, the latter beingprovided with a hole at the end. Atthe narrow end of the coupling headis a locking device, the principal partof which is the coupling bolt. The automatic coupling isprovided with a boss on the side of the coupling head,on which the cables for the electric brakes can be fixedif required. The coupling head is attached to the car, just as in the old type coupling, by means of a rod pro-vided with draw and buffer gear.
