On the middle keystone downstreamare several shields, with coats of arms, among whichare those of Bishop Gabriel de S. Estevan, indicating arestoration by that prelate in 1690, about which timethe semicircular arches were probably rebuilt, thecentral one being a little flattened. Of the medieval houses, only oneof the fifteenth or sixteenth century survives, a wooden-framed building close to the lower cathedral. Manywith little character, of the seventeenth and eighteenthcenturies, may be seen, and a few doors of the periodof Louis XIII. Here and there in the narrow and steepstreets are bits of loggias, which remind one of Italy. We came back to St. Girons on the other side ofthe stream ; the road runs very near to it, and the viewwas very attractive, with snowy mountains closingthe vista, and the foreground of rushing water tumblingover the rocky ledges.
