View SW across Talley lake, Carmarthenshire, Wales, UK, to the central tower & other remains of the abbey, with the graveyard of St Michael's church to the N (R). Founded 1184-94 by the Lord Rhys (Rhys ap Gruffudd, Welsh prince of Deheubarth) for Premonstratensian canons. The abbey was suppressed in 1536. It is situated at the head of two lakes (Welsh name Talyllychau = 'head of the lakes') which drain northwards via a stream flowing towards the Afon Cothi. Legends suggest a town lies under the waters of the lake, & that Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym (1320-80) was buried here rather than at Strata Florida Abbey.
