This image shows St. Peter's Church in Aldborough Hatch, Newbury Park, Ilford, Essex, England. St. Peter's Church was built in decorated Gothic style with shingle spire from stones of first Westminster Bridge. Stained glass by Hardman & Co. Organ by Gray and Davidson 1862. Includes recycled Portland stone. Architect: Arthur Ashpitel Year Built: 1862 Period: Victorian St Peter's – celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2012 – was built in 1861/62 in decorated Gothic style, with a steep pitch slate roof with small gable, louvered vents, a shingle spire, and an interior pitch pine roof. At this time, the 18th century Westminster Bridge in London was being replaced and the contractor also had the order for the new church at Aldborough Hatch. The Portland stone of the old bridge (supplied by the quarries on Portland Island in Dorset) was used to build St Peter's – which was so named after the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, popularly known as Westminster Abbey. Consecrated on 6th March 1862, it is Grade ll listed. The architect was Arthur Ashpitel (1807-1869), who built the churches of St John's, Blackheath and St Barnabas, Homerton, as well as schools, private houses, baths and washhouses. The organ at St Peter's was built by Gray and Davison Ltd (established 1862) for the 1862 London Exhibition. It was the model for the painting ‘Harmony’ by Sir Frank Dicksee (1853-1928) which hangs in the Tate Gallery. The decoration on the organ was painted and stencilled by Nathaniel Hubert John Westlake (1883-1921), whose works include stained glass for Arundel Cathedral.
