55 ci 44 hp top speed 95 mph After World War II middleweight British motorcyles that were smaller and more agile than Indians and Harleys flooded the American market In 1952 Harley Davidson responded with the 750 cc Model K its first series production motorcycle with rear suspension and a foot shift Improvements to the Model K resulted in the KHK a high performance model with a 55 ci engine In 1957 a new overhead valve engine was substituted and became the XL Sportster Harley s Model K continued to dominate the nation s race tracks though the end o the 1960s
