Neck arteries. Historical illustration showing two images of the human head with dissected necks revealing the neck arteries.

Neck arteries. Historical illustration of the arteries of the neck. The upper image shows a head and dissected neck revealing the external carotid artery (running vertically in the image) and some of its branches. A small part of the common carotid artery is also shown near its termination. The right subclavian artery is shown horizontally at the base of the neck proceeding behind the clavicle. The lower image, again of a head with dissected neck, shows the origin of the common carotid and subclavian arteries at the right side of the brachio-cephalic artery. These can be seen on the bottom right of the image. Also included are the thyroid artery as it rises from the subclavian and the ascending cervical artery, rising through the centre of the image. Colour lithograph by Fairland from The Vessels of the Human Body, 1837.
