Peacock tail support feathers. Male Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) from behind, with its tail raised in its fan display. This large, brightly coloured bird is native to southern Asia, but has been introduced, and is semi-feral, in many other parts of the world. Bird feathers are attached to a complex array of muscles to move and arrange them. The male peacock lifts its long train feathers to form a fan with the support of the stiff tail feathers seen here.
