A field of cotton at the gatheringseason, when the globes of snowy wool are seen amongthe glossy dark green leaves, is singularly beautiful;and in the hottest countries, where the yellow blossomor flower, and the ripened fruit, are seen at the sametime, the beauty of the plantation is of course still moreremarkable. In India, the mode of cultivation ismost slovenly, as the seed is sown broadcast, and the THE COTTON MANUFACTURE. 289 plant is neglected at every stage of its growth; which,together with the carelessness of the natives in gatheringthe cotton, in separating it from the seeds, and in pack-ing it, makes the Indian cotton so much inferior to thatof the United States.* A representation of a branch of the herbaceous cotton,with the flower, and the pods open and closed, has beengiven at page 13; and the following shows the appearanceof the plant when growing :—.
