The dome of Khan As'ad Pasha, an old Ottoman Khan (karavanserai) in Damascus, Syria. UNESCO World Heritage Site

A khan in the Arab world was a warehouse for storage, or an inn to lodge passing caravans. This khan was built by, and named after, the governor As'ad Pasha al-Azem in1752 . It is one of the finest buildings in the Old City of Damascus. Eight small domes with arches are grouped round a large circular courtyard with a central marble pool. The stripes are made of alternate layers of basalt and limestone. The khan was restored in 1990. It is accessed from an internal street in the Souq.
