One day, while driving through thenarrow streets of Guildford, he met a cart stacked withbrushwood; as Tom was driving a team he had the right ofthe road, but the carter refused to give way. This mustbe seen to, said Tom, and throwing his reins to the groomhe jumped down and challenged the carter to fight it man did so, but in a very short time Tom had laidhim out (Clandon MSS.).
