Avocet screaming towards yet another bird that has dared to come anywhere hear its chicks. This shows a new method of attack.

This new method of attack shows it screaming towards another bird, (could be a shellduck, crow, egret, heron etc) but it has discovered that if it drags its claws through the water the swishing sound adds to the frightening effect. Nesting Avocets are incredibly aggressive. They will attack anything that flies, over, through or onto their territory. Their plan, especially as a colony is to drive off absolutely anything that comes in to their patch right from day one. It doesn't take many days for other local birds, egrets, herons, even nearby nesting marsh harriers (which the avocets still drive off) to choose peace and quiet rather than confrontation and very soon the avocet's patch is free from intruders, at least that is the plan. Every few minutes however, a newcomer may fly in such as a wandering black headed gull and off the avocets go yet again and this goes on all day long.
