Infected tonsil. Close-up of the mouth of a 22-year-old male patient with a ruptured left-sided peritonsillar abscess (or quinsy). Peritonsillar abscesses are a complication of tonsillitis that consist of a collection of pus in the peritonsillar space next to the tonsil. They are usually a result of an untreated, or partially treated episode of tonsillitis, where the infection spreads to the peritonsillar area and an abscess forms.
