I left mynative land to gather with the Saintsto Utah in February, 1852, on boardthe sailing vessel Ellen Maria with acompany of Saints in charge of ElderIsaac C. Haight. The voyage through-out was a pleasant one. We landed atNew Orleans April 6, 1852, and fromthat city we took steamer to St. Louis,Mo., and thence to Westport. point Elder Abraham O. Smo?ttook charge of the company and wasour captain overland to Sait Lake outfit for the overland journey was. purchased at Westport, and our com-pany consisted of about thirty drove an ox-team which carried tensouls and the necessary supplies. Thiswas the first company that emigratedunder the Perpetual Emigration crossing the plains we suf-fered severely from the cholera whichwas prevailing in certain parts of theUnited States at that time. We ar-rived in Salt Lake City in September,1852. After staying about three weeksin Salt Lake City, I moved to Taylors-ville, Salt Lake county, where I helpedto build a fort for protection againstthe Indians, and was also called to actas a guard at the south point of thevalley, and also on the west side—three days at each place every week during the summer of 1853. About thistime Pres. Brigham Young called fortwenty families to go and strengthenthe Herriman settlement, and I
