At noon, having journeyed about twelve milesthrough these villages and cultivated fields, we reacheda spot near an acequia, where there was grass, and apleasant grove of mezquit trees. Here we pitchedour tents, intending to remain a few days. We had scarcely got our camp in order, when wewere surrounded by the Pimos. I sent a messenger toinform their head chief Cola Azul (blue tail) who wasat work in the fields, that I would be glad to see a short time he appeared, accompanied by his inter-preter Tu-maams. Although it was a dreadfully hotday, when we felt like divesting ourselves of as muchclothing as possible, Cola Azul appeared in a large blueblanket overcoat, pantaloons, and a green felt hat, while his attendants were either naked, or wore aroundtheir loins the white cotton blanket of their own manu-facture. He at once presented me a number of ere- Identials from various American officers, and others, who had passed here, and held intercourse with him.
