The faces of the pulpit above aredivided by slender columns into panels filled with mosaic and marbleinlay. Near the pulpit stands a paschal candlestick of great beauty,about eleven feet high, on a circular base or plinth, ornamented withstanding figures between foliage. The shaft is of delicate mosaic inspirals, interrupted by two bands of sculpture divided by coupledcolonnettes into compartments enclosing figures of popes and Fig. 282. Sessa. Pulpit in Cathedral. THE SOUTHERN ROMANESQUE 67 This interesting work is contemporary with the pulpit, both dating,according to an inscription, from 1260.^ One of the most richly adorned pulpits is that of the cathedral ofRavello. (Fig. 283.) It is nearly contemporary with thelast mentioned, thouo^h somewhat later. Six lions support veUotwisted columns with a fine mosaic in the spirals and richfoliaged capitals.
