Astronaut in ISS airlock. Astronaut James Reilly using the Quest airlock for the first time as he exits the International Space Station (ISS) on 20 July 2001. The 6-metre-long, airlock was attached on 15 July 2001 to the ISS Unity module. The airlock will allow the crew to conduct space walks. Reilly was part of the crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis as it flew this mission (STS-104) from 12-24 July 2001. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA, the European Space Agency, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan and Brazil. It orbits at an altitude of 350 kilometres, has been manned since late 2000 and is scheduled for completion in 2004.
