Films are convenient on long trips but cost nearly twice asmuch as plates. Also from the nature of a film camera, evenan expert is tempted to shoot off twice as many exposures asthe subject warrants, because of the ease with which a newfilm can be wound into place, and for a beginner this featureis simply fatal to his pocketbook. Therefore, take temptationaway and also do better and much more interesting workby using a small plate camera. 198. p I—I in I—I WH 199 As far as convenience is concerned a plate camera is smallerand lighter than a film one of same size picture. If thinmetal plate holders are used a dozen can be carried in thecoat pockets, or a small case, and for special occasions a filmpack can usually be fitted. A tripod is no more necessary than for a film camera, andyou have the enormous advantage of composing your picturefull size on the ground glass and being able to focus just asyou want it, then noting your boundary or some distinctiveobject, the small finder can be used to locate same while mak-ing exposure. I find a 3^ x 4^ size most satisfactory. Plates of thissize cost only 45c. per dozen at present high prices, and youalso have a wide choice, fast, slow, color corrected, etc., soyou can select just the right kind for the class of work youdecide to take up.
