The ISLE OF IONA ashore on Whitby Rock (Just off the East Pier) on 7th December 1906, shortly before she sank completely. She was steam driven coal cargo ship (collier) built by T & W Smith , North Shields. Owned by the Isles Steam shipping Co. Ltd., Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. First owned by Dixon, Robson & Co., Newcastle-Upon-Tyne( 1899 ~ 1899) . Captain was J. H. Cussons - Crew 17. (Another picture of the sunken ship is available on Alamy)
