This is a real situation. Image not to be used in a defamatory context. Sickle cell disease clinic. Nurse recording the details of blood that is to be used in red blood cell exchange transfusions to treat patients with sickle cell disease. Also known as sickle cell anaemia and drepanocytosis, this is an inherited blood disease that largely affects black people. The blood's red blood cells contain abnormal haemoglobin that distorts them into a fragile sickle shape. This means they are easily destroyed, leading to symptoms of anaemia. Severe cases can require blood transfusions to replace the red blood cells.
