An old ilustration showing 'gentle' Father Marquette, Jesuit explorer & missionary sailing the Mississippi in 1673. --- Jacques Marquette ( 1637 – 1675), also known as Père Marquette or James Marquette, was a French-Canadian Jesuit missionary who founded Michigan's first European settlement, Sault Sainte Marie, and later founded Saint Ignace. He was also was the first European to explore and map the northern Mississippi River Valley. He died at 37 years of age from the effects of dysentery near the modern town of Ludington, Michigan
