Combined printer-telegraph, 19th-century artwork. This 'combination printing telegraph instrument' (an early form of teleprinter) was manufactured by the American Telegraph Company. It is described as combining elements of earlier inventions by David E. Hughes (1831-1900) and Royal Earl House (1814-1895), as well as the electromagnetic governor of George May Phelps (1820-1888). This artwork is from the frontispiece to 'History, Theory, and Practice of the Electric Telegraph' (1860) by US telegraph engineer George Bartlett Prescott (1830-1894).
