Box and blister pack of Lariam antimalarial tablets. Each tablet contains 250 milligrams of the drug mefloquine hydrochloride. People travelling to areas in which malaria is prevalent should take these pills before, during and after their trip. Malaria is caused by the presence of Plasmodium sp. parasites in the blood. The parasites are spread by the bites of infected female Anopheles sp. mosquitoes. Lariam has numerous side-effects, including vomiting and convulsions. Some neuropsychiatric side effects, including anxiety, suicidal thoughts, dizziness and tinnitus can persist even after discontinuing the drug. Therefore, newer and less harmful antimalarial drugs are given if possible.
