By making the outline of his figures broken and indistinct, thedesigner has given a soft, mossy appearance to his work, suggestive of ayielding, restful sensation to the tread. Carpets being of the nature of tapestr)^ and in olden times being madein much the same way, we find that the earliest designs for their decoration arevery much in the style of tapestry designs.
